A motion from the House of Bishops was presented to Synod yesterday (Friday) with the intent that it shall be discussed today (Saturday 12th May). The motion is a minor reworking of the three motions which were ruled out or withdrawn on Thursday. The reworking is an attempt to meet the legal concerns raised. In this morning’s Irish Independent (Saturday 12th) in the course of a very short report, the Archbishop of Dublin, Rt Rev Michael Jackson has said he hopes a discussion would lead to greater understanding. The report continues:
“We gather in these numbers and with this density once a year to enable people to express their views on an issue which is of tremendous importance in society and also in the life of the church”, he is reported saying.
Responding to the warning s of division and alienation from gay members of the church, Archbishop Jackson said the discussion was necessary.
“My hope is that through continuing and deepening the process of listening, and contribution and conversation, that we will come to a much greater and sustained understanding of one another : I think this is the way forward”, he said. (End of Independent report).
