Derry Cathedral looks forward

‘It’s not just about celebrating a wonderful history up to this present day. We look forward now with great excitement to the place of St Columb’s Cathedral in the life of our city and beyond” said the Dean Of Derry, Very Rev William Morton.

He made his comments looking forward to a Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication for the Cathedral on 9th June.

During the past year and more the ancient Cathedral of St Columb’s has been the scene of a major refurbishment and renovation. There are few parts of the interior and exterior that have not received major attention. The Cathedral, which was opened, in 1634 will soon celebrate the enhancements of the last eighteen months.

Dean Morton said “ The history and beauty of the Cathedral is something that brings great pleasure not only to our parishioners but to the tens of thousands of visitors each year. In the newly renovated Cathedral they will see how the beauty of an ancient building has been preserved whilst using the latest in new technology in a tasteful way” He said, “We value the past and look into the future with great anticipation”.

St Columb’s is one of the most ancient buildings within the city walls. With a major contribution to the religious, cultural and community life with the city the major repairs and renovation put it in place to make a vital contribution to the celebrations during the City of Culture Year.

A special Service of Thanksgiving and Rededication will take place  in the Cathedral on 9th June at 7.30pm.
