A team of 36 pupils and leaders from Limavady Grammar School will be travelling to Kajiado Diocese in Kenya from the 28th June – 28th July.
They are a cross-community team who will be completing the construction of a Girls’ Secondary School in Kajiado Diocese, Kenya. The Oloosuyian Girls’ Secondary School will be officially dedicated by the Bishop, the Right Rev Jeremiah Taama and opened by LGS Headmaster Mr Robert Wilson on the 2nd July.
Mr Wilson said ‘This visit to Kenya represents the ongoing commitment of our school over many years to the Kajiado District of Kenya. This is the third group of staff, pupils and the members of the wider Limavady Community to travel to undertake project work. Our whole school and the wider community have been involved in fundraising in order to support the excellent work.’
There are currently 15 pupils at the Oloosuyian School with 3 teachers and the church building almost completed for the official opening. The school will encourage girls from Maasai culture to receive a 2nd level education with sponsored places to support them to come along.
This team marks the 10th Anniversary of the partnership between LGS and Kajiado Diocese, Kenya. Over the last 10 years £100,000 has been raised for projects in the Kenyan diocese supporting water schemes, education and training. The whole community in Limavady has supported this partnership and has been involved with fundraising and raising awareness of the needs of the people in Kajiado. This will be the 3rd team of pupils to travel Kenya over the last 10 years.
CMS Ireland has been in partnership with Kajiado Diocese for over 30 years. They have facilitated and trained the teams from LGS and guided this partnership with their expertise in the field. CMS Ireland is delighted with how both communities in Limavady and Kajiado have embraced the partnership and are eager to see the model repeated with other schools in Ireland.
