SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

1 Corinthians 5:7-8 Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch, as you really are unleavened. For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. Therefore, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Bread is a simple food—flour, water, oil, yeast, a bit of sugar, time, and heat. Yeast—a living organism—eats the sugar and gives a gorgeous rise to a loaf of bread. Likewise, for us to rise, we must have the leaven of a living and lively faith.

My leavening agents are a faith rooted in worship, prayer, service, engagement with scripture, and a practice of generosity. A rising faith compels me to engage with my world, my neighbours, my community, and my government. The yeast of faith bubbles up in me and empowers me to speak about the audacious hope expressed in Jesus’ life and resurrection—the surest transformative change in the world. A faith that does not transform us is like bad yeast, leaving us flat and short of our potential.

MOVING FORWARD: Make a loaf of bread to share with family or friends.
