17,000 reached with gospel message thanks to online sports quiz

A Christian sporting charity is reaching tens of thousands of people with the message of Jesus through the launch of its weekly online quiz.

As digital quizzes become increasingly popular during the lockdown, Christians in Sport has utilised the trend to engage with sporting fans from across the world and tell them about the Christian faith.

The charity has been encouraging Christian sportspeople to stay in the lives of their teammates throughout the pandemic by inviting them to its weekly sports quiz which contains a short gospel talk.

The competition which has being running for the past two Friday evenings consists of four rounds of sport-based trivia, each with ten questions.

17,000 people from 50 countries competed in the online quiz last week, according to the charity.

Quiz master Ian Lancaster told Premier they were ‘startled’ by its success.

“It’s mad. We’re doing quizzes all the time as part of what we do as Christians in Sport. We get on average about 50 people to these quizzes whenever we do them around the UK, so to get 350 teams on week one, and 17,000 people over 50 different countries on week two, it’s just really, really encouraging.”

Lancaster has attributed their engagement to the relatability of the quizzes: “I think it’s an easy ask for Christian sportspeople to say to friends ‘Come on let’s do this.’ It’s in the safety of your own living room. You can get a beer or a cup of coffee and sit in your most comfy sofa. You can even click out whenever you want and everyone loves a quiz.”

Following the trivia, a member of Christians in Sport leads a small talk to explain more about Christianity to help Christian sportspeople ‘get the ball rolling’ with sharing their faith with team mates and integrating them into the life of the Church.

“The talk is simply saying, this is who Jesus is, this is what he’s done, this is what it looks like to trust in him and this is what your Christian friend really wants you to hear – so we kind of put the ball back in the court of the Christian sportsperson who’s invited their friends along to the quiz.”

Lancaster went on to encourage all Christians, regardless of their profession to see the coronavirus pandemic as an opportunity to bring the hope of the gospel to people.

“At this time, as Christians, it’s really important that we’re on the front foot in saying this is what I believe in and my faith isn’t just a crutch to get me through, but it gives me hope in real truth that I can put my life upon.

“There’s a good opportunity for Christians everywhere, to say, ‘how can I be salt and light?’ How can I share life, share the good news of Jesus with those around me like perhaps I’ve never done before.”

Christians in Sport’s next quiz will take place live on YouTube on Friday 15th May.
