Belfast Seminar on Trauma, Vulnerability, Resilience & Growth

Colleen Brown, Coordinator of the Journey Towards Healing Programme  gives details of an upcoming seminar in Belfast

Colleen writes: We are delighted to invite you to join us in dialogue at our 2nd Post-Conference Seminar

The first seminar in November – ‘The Realities of Stress in Ministry’ – was created as a response to a common theme that feedback from our international conference made clear:  a desire for the faith communities to continue to explore the reality of stress (including traumatic stress) in the work of ministry; to develop skills to understand and manage stress, as individuals, communities and organisations.  60 people, from across denominations in Northern Ireland and Ireland, came together for the seminar, which took place 9 November 2011 @ Presbyterian Church in Ireland Church House, Belfast.  Thank you to all of you who participated and sent messages of support!

Our second seminar in February, has been created as a response to another common theme that feedback from our international conference made clear:  a desire to have further opportunities for the various health sectors and faith communities to meet; to develop skills to understand the impact of trauma more holistically, and to understand the different aspects of insight and caregiving that physical, mental, spiritual and public health professionals bring – which each can have a role to play in supporting trauma survivors toward their best possible chances for growth, health and healing.

The lead input for this seminar will be from Arlene Healey, social worker, family therapist, and head of Belfast’s Family Trauma Centre.  Her presentation is entitled ‘Thinking Systemically about the Transgenerational Impact of Trauma’.  She will be joined by stories of trauma and vulnerability – and illustrations of resilience and growth – shared by both health professionals and pastoral workers, living and working in Belfast, particularly North Belfast.
