St Katharine’s crosses ‘have blessed many’
As part of its All Saints’ Day Communion Service on Sunday November 1, St Katharine’s Parish Church, Belfast, dedicated 240 handheld crosses which were presented to the Northern Ireland (NI) Hospice the following day.
The rector and volunteer chaplain, the Rev Canon William Taggart, has been involved with the NI Hospice for 20 years, and as part of the parish’s support for him and his ministry, St Katharine’s has presented hundreds of these crosses which are given to the patients by the chaplains.
William has seen first-hand the comfort these small gifts mean to those who receive them as the end of life approaches and words are less important.
The Hospice’s Lead Chaplain, Jim Armstrong, wrote: “I cannot express the impact that these crosses often have on our patients. Just the feeling of something so tangible and comforting brings comfort and relief.
“In these difficult days of restrictions and isolation, the touch of wood resting easily in the palm of the hand is a reminder of a God, who is ever present and abiding.
“Your congregation have blessed many through their thoughtfulness, practical love and generosity. So, on behalf of those whom you don’t know and will probably never meet, I thank you. Only eternity itself will reveal the blessing these crosses will bring.”
Archbishop Eamon Martin – no evidence church gatherings in Ireland are contribute to the spread of Covid-19
The Church is stepping up the campaign to put pressure on the Government in the Republic to allow people to attend Mass in a safe and physically-distanced way.
Archbishop Eamon Martin writes exclusively for The Irish Catholic this week. “Since returning to Mass and the sacraments in late June, thanks to the efforts of thousands of parish staff, volunteers and cleaners, and careful monitoring by teams on the ground, there has been no evidence that church gatherings in Ireland are contributing to the spread of Covid-19 infection.”

Pointers for Prayer
As we hear of increased sickness across the world we look to God our Healer and pray that he will cause many to be restored to health, both through the skill of the medical professions, and sovereignly, through his healing power.
Today we pray for asylum seekers crossing seas to reach safety. Last week, two children died in the Channel and more than 100 drowned off Senegal after an explosion.
Give thanks for the formation of the new Province of Alexandria, which will consist of the Dioceses of Egypt, North Africa, Gambella and the Horn of Africa. Pray for Archbishop Mouneer as he undertakes leadership, with many challenges to face – CMSI
Today we give thanks for God’s beautiful creation. Recently, Australian scientists have discovered a detached reef taller than the Empire State Building at the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef
