Canon Dermot Jameson is ordained 70 years

Congratulations to Canon Dermot Jameson (Photo above) who has just celebrated the 70th anniversary of his ordination. Dermot was celebrant at the Eucharist in his home church of St Bronach’s, Rostrevor, on Sunday 18 October.

Not only was it a special occasion for Dermot but also the first time in some months that the parishioners had shared the Eucharist together.
Rector, Rt Revd Darren McCartney said:

“It was with great joy and gratitude that we came together as a church family and very special to have our bishop, The Rt Revd David and his wife Hilary, joined us for this special moment. Bishop David and Hilary kindly presented a gift, brought greetings and shared further with us in the service. The churchwardens made presentations to both Canon Dermot and his wife Sheila and a cake was cut for the special occasion.

“These moments just don’t happen without work going on in the background and I want to thank everyone who helped to make the service such a memorable occasion.”

Incredibly, Canon Dermot is 94 and his wife Sheila is a sprightly 90 years old.

Dermot’s ordained ministry

Dermot was ordained in 1950 and served his whole ministry in Down and Dromore. He was curate in Seagoe (50–53) and Holywood (53–57) after which he became incumbent of Kilkeel. From 1962–67 he was incumbent of Donaghcloney with Waringstown, becoming a Canon of Dromore Cathedral in 1977. His last incumbency was in Kilbroney, the parish into which he retired in 1993.

How clergy thrive – booklet published today

How clergy thrive is based on insights from The Living Ministry project.
The Living Ministry project is a ten-year programme by the Church of England to better understand what enables clergy – stipendiary, self-supporting and chaplains – to flourish, both in terms of personal wellbeing and effectiveness in their role.

This booklet is the result of inviting clergy to reflect on their vocation and ministry experience in five areas:

* Calling to priesthood
* Institutional identity
* Shape of ministry
* Places and posts
* Tasks of ministry

Drawing on this research, How Clergy Thrive offers significant insights into the factors that allow priestly ministry to flourish, the pressures and challenges that hinder it, and the training programmes that will be needed for the future.

It gives an accurate portrayal of lived clergy experience in the Church of England today that will be essential reading for all involved in clergy selection, training and support, and will give priests invaluable insights into the dynamics of their work.

Being published on Wednesday by Church House Publishing – How Clergy Thrive by Liz Graveling and Simon Butler. Just £2.99. Order at –

Pointers to Prayer

Today we pray for cities across Nigeria. Demonstrations against police brutality have escalated in response to attacks on protesters by unidentified men with machetes. We pray for a just peace in Nigeria and an end to police violence worldwide.

Please pray for Church Army key workers who are involved in distributing food and supplies; that they will have new opportunities to make connections with the people who visit.

Today we pray for children in west and central Africa. Unicef has warned that the closure of schools during the pandemic has led to millions being unable to access education, leaving children at risk of child marriage, early pregnancy and recruitment by local armed groups.

Homelessness – Today we give thanks for charities working to support rough sleepers and other homeless people during the pandemic. Homeless Sunday past stressed that a difficult winter lies ahead for those without a home or facing homelessness.

Tearfund NI – We have recently implemented a new project in Sierra Leone to help end cases of Female Genital Mutilation or Cutting (FGM/C). This will help to empower women in their communities, and sit alongside our other initiatives to reduce this horrific abuse. Pray for an end to FGM/C.

God in creation
