Friends of Cloyne Cathedral launched

Friday night saw the launch of a new society, Friends of Cloyne Cathedral, dedicated to enhancing the use of this heritage site in Cloyne by the wider community. The evening began when Ms Pem Stanley played  several organ pieces, leaving those present in no doubt of the Cathedral’s superior acoustics. Dean Alan Marley welcomed all present and launched the new society of Friends, which plans an on-going series of cultural events.

A cheese and wine reception followed, as Ms Patricia Lyons and Dr Clodagh Tait led impromptu walkabout tours of the Cathedral’s treasures.

First built in the 7th century, the  site’s current building dates from the 13th century.  Cloyne Cathedral is often associated  with  its two famous bishops,  the philosopher George Berkeley and the  astronomer John Brinkley. We wish the Friends of Cloyne Cathedral success in fostering appreciation of the cathedral’s treasures among the wider community.

Memorial service for sudden death held

A memorial service to remember young people who have died from sudden cardiac death has taken place in Dublin.

The Sudden Cardiac Death in the Young Support Group encouraged family and friends of those whose lives have been affected by sudden cardiac death to take part in a candle lighting ceremony at Monkstown Church of Ireland parish church.

The service was held in association with the Irish Heart Foundation.
Secretary of the support group Monica Martin said it is not just young sports people who are affected by this condition.

Ms Martin said there are about 60 to 80 deaths each year and many of these happen when people are at home.
