Limerick youth visit to South Africa
A small group of three from Limerick and Killaloe Diocese are preparing to travel to South Africa’s Western Cape to visit their link diocese of Saldahna Bay. The group consisting of Damian Shorten, Jason Downes and leader, Ed Hardy will set out in late August. More in Children & Youth section, this site.
Back to Church Sunday
The Church of Ireland Council for Mission is encouraging parishes and churches across Ireland to register for and get involved in Back to Church Sunday on the 25th September this year. In partnership with the Methodist Church in Ireland, the Church of Ireland has produced a short DVD on the initiative which will give you a flavour of what it’s all about, see the video below or view it on YouTube. Hall is a tribute to lifetime of service
The parish of All Saints’, Loughguile, has officially opened its first church hall.
In recent years the number of families attending the north Antrim church have increased by 66 per cent, thanks largely to the work of the late Mary Christie.
Mary used to make a point of welcoming and talking to every new person who came along to a service, making them feel so at home many of them went on to join the church.
Mary died a few years ago at the age of 91, having served in the parish choir for more than 80 years and having been a member of the select vestry for 60 years.
The hall was built with a grant from the Church of Ireland Priorities Fund, a donation from Susie Mackie and money left by Mary Christie. As a tribute to her lifetime of service to the parish, the hall was aptly named the Mary Christie Hall.
The hall was dedicated by the Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev Alan Abernethy. Others taking part in the service included Mrs Mackie and Eleanor and Katy Christie, Mary’s great-granddaughters and members of the parish Sunday School.
Heritage Week 2011 @ St Doulagh’s Church, Malahide Road, Balgriffin.
This ancient yet vibrant church & site of Christian Worship, (circa 6th) will be open for Guided Tours & Stories during heritage week as follows:
Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 August from 2 – 6pm.
Wednesday 24 August – Guided tours from 3 –6pm, and at 8.00pm a talk by Dr Rachel Moss (Author & Historian) on St Doulagh’s and the medieval churches of Fingal, using visual & historical sources. This will be followed by a time for questions & answers.
Saturday 27 & Sunday 28 August from 2.00-6.00pm
Admission is free, however, donations to the Church Restoration Fund will always be welcome. Partial wheelchair access available. Parking available in the upper car park of St Doolagh’s Pk. Farewell to ordinand
Nicola Halford will speak on Sunday 21 August 2011 at the 11.30 Eucharist in the Church of St Catherine and St James, Donore Avenue. The Anthem Gospel Choir directed by Des Cox will lead the singing. There will be a reception afterwards in the hall attached to the Church. This event marks Nicola’s farewell to her home Parish, as she will be ordained in September, to serve in the parish of Athy.
Lecture on the Royal British Legion
Patrick Hugh Lynch will give a public lecture on the Royal British Legion in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin on Friday, 26 August at 1pm.
The Royal British Legion was founded 90 years ago this year and has been working in Ireland since it was founded. As the 100th anniversary of the Great War approaches, Patrick’s lecture will provide an opportunity to gain a greater understanding about those Irish Men and Women who came home to a “Green and Troubled Land”.
