Eminent New Testament scholar to speak in TCD

Renowned New Testament scholar, Professor Richard Bauckham, will give a public lecture entitled “Jesus and the Eyewitnesses” in the Swift Lecture Theatre, TCD on Wednesday 13 April at 7.30pm.

Professor Bauckham, formerly Professor of New Testament studies in St Andrew’s University, is best known for his challenging thesis that, contrary to scholarly consensus, the four Gospels are closely based on the eyewitness testimony of those who knew Jesus.

This was the central argument of his 2006 volume “Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony” and this will also be the focus of the public lecture.

This event at Trinity College Dublin is sure to ignite debate on the precise character of the testimony about Jesus. It will be of interest to scholars, students, and all who seek to understand the origins of the Gospels.

Commenting on the forthcoming lecture, Dean of Residence at TCD, the Revd Darren McCallig said, “Richard Bauckham’s work is never dull and frequently controversial. He is not afraid to take on the scholarly consensus and ask penetrating and provocative questions. His breath of knowledge of early Christianity combined with a profound theological understanding means that his writings always offer fresh insights and thought-provoking conclusions. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Professor Bauckham to TCD.”

The lecture is a joint initiative between the Church of Ireland Chaplaincy at TCD, the Church of Ireland Theological Institute and the School of Religions and Theology, TCD.

Admission to the lecture is free and all are welcome. There will be a reception afterwards in the GMB. Please note that there is no parking on the TCD campus. For further information, telephone (00353) 1 896 1402.
