A heavenly host has arrived in Magheralin this Christmas as the parish church hosts 24 life–size angels for a major festival called Angels Among Us.
The exhibition explores the angel stories of the Bible and has been two years in the making. It showcases the incredible skills of many of Ireland’s established and emerging artists such as Ross Wilson, Philip Steele and Keith Sheppard and others.
The breath–taking angels are sculpted from an extensive variety of media including glass, ceramics, metal and wood. Some will be familiar, and others will surprise and challenge, but all will delight visitors to the Church of Ireland parish between November 28 and December 8.
Dr Sarah Cousins, the Creative Director, is excited about the exhibition and explains: “We understand that not all churches have the resources to organise a Festival of Angels from scratch so we envisage that churches, prisons, hospitals and other appropriate venues and social spaces will be able to host this travelling exhibition, in support of fundraising for a wide range of charitable causes.”
The organisers envisage this exhibition touring for many years to come, helping people throughout Ireland to appreciate the role of angels in biblical scripture as messengers of God, as well as to allow them to see the wealth of creative talent that is very much home–grown.
