Archbishop welcomes Black Institution’s public letter
The Most Revd Alan Harper, Archbishop of Armagh, gave the following comment to the Belfast Newsletter:

I welcome the public letter issued by the Royal Black Institution today (6 September) which apologises for any offence caused to the clergy and parishioners of St Patrick’s Church last weekend and which states the desire for the Institution to play its part in a peaceful civic society. I also welcome the Institution’s request to meet with Protestant Church leaders such as myself as I believe that we must all engage in peaceful and constructive dialogue in our society. I trust that everyone respects cultural and religious freedom and that Christian people display respect, generosity and love to others.

“Soul Sisters”  at TCD Chapel
The autumn series of visiting speakers at Trinity College Dublin Chapel will speak about the women who have inspired them, challenged them, or had a profound influence on their lives. Amongst the speakers are the well–known broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan, the co–founder of the homeless charity “Trust” Alice Leahy, and the Ombudsman and Information Commissioner, Ms. Emily O’Reilly.

Commenting on the series, the TCD Dean of Residence, the Revd Darren McCallig, said: “Women are the great unsung heroes of the Church and many other walks of life. For centuries their voices and their experiences have been marginalised and not infrequently silenced. This series will be a celebration of those women – some well–know to the public and some known only to their families and friends – who have had a major influence on the lives of those around them.”

The full list of visiting speakers is as follows: Alice Leahy, Director of “Trust”, a service for people who are homeless (7 October); Miriam O’Callaghan, TV and Radio presenter, broadcast journalist (21 October); The Revd Celia Grace Kenny, Church of Scotland Minister (4 November); Dr. Cathríona Russell, School of Religions and Theology, TCD (18 November) and Ms. Emily O’Reilly, Ombudsman and Information Commissioner (2 December). The TCD Dean of Residence, the Revd Darren McCallig, will preach on the other Sundays (30 September, 14 and 28 October, 11 and 25 November and 9 December).

All the addresses are in the context of the Sunday morning Choral Eucharist at 10.45am. All are welcome.

Full details of the series and recordings of the addresses are available on the TCD Chaplaincy website: www.tcd.ie/chaplaincy

Minister to open exhibition on 19th century schooling
The Church of Ireland College of Education in conjunction with the National Museum of Ireland Collins Barracks are launching an exhibition entitled ‘The Kildare Place Society and Schooling in the Nineteenth Century’ on Thursday 20th September. The exhibition, which will run until June 2013, will be opened by the Minister for Education and Skills Ruairi Quinn T.D. All exhibits are from the CICE Plunket Museum and the CICE archives.

The Kildare Place Society was founded in Dublin in 1811 by a group of philanthropic Dublin citizens with the aim of providing non–denominational education for the poor in Ireland. The Society’s pioneering work included the building of schools, teacher training, the publication of an extensive library of reading books and the establishment of an inspectorate to monitor schools. The Society received a parliamentary grant until 1831 but this ceased with the advent of the Irish National School system. The Society’s influence on teaching was significant and many of its innovations influenced the National School system.

Church’s Ministry of Healing training
The Dublin & Glendalough Diocesan Committee of the Church’s Ministry of Healing: Ireland will be hosting another round of training sessions for prayer ministry for those who were unable to attend the May dates. Prayer ministers participate in the liturgy, praying, laying on of hands and anointing with oil in the context of a healing service.

The programme consists of a two–day course (two Saturdays) followed by a period of mentoring. Led by Dean Dermot Dunne and Canon Sue Watterson, the course explores best practice, listening skills, and a theological grounding for the healing ministry. It will take place from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm on Saturdays 15 and 22 September in the music room of Christ Church Cathedral. Participants will be asked to contribute a total of €20 at registration on September 15 to cover the cost of food and materials. Attendance on both days is required to complete the course.

To apply for training, candidates should complete the application form below and return it to their rector. The Ministry of Healing is a collegial ministry, which focuses on the health of the community as well as that of the individual. For this reason, and also to ensure the ministry’s integrity, applicants must have a recommendation from their rector (form below) before their application can be considered. Therefore, the ministry asks that all applications go through the appropriate clergy before reaching the central office.
