Archdeacon and Canons Installed in Down Cathedral

The new Archdeacon of Down and two new canons were installed in Down Cathedral yesterday, 10 July (Photo above).

Restrictions around COVID-19 had delayed the service by 101 days and also necessitated a much simpler service than usual. It was shared only by the Bishop and Chapter, the Registrar and close family members but was nevertheless, a happy occasion.

Dean Henry Hull installed Ven Ken Higgins as Archdeacon of Down, Canon Helene Steed as Prebendary of Dunsford and Canon Bill Press as Prebendary of Talpestone. Canon John Auchmuty was installed as the Chancellor of the Cathedral.

Bishop David gave the reading and a brief address before closing with the prayers.

C of I library seeks help with lantern slides

The Representative Church Body Library – which serves as the Church of Ireland’s central archive repository – holds a large collection of lantern slides, from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which have been donated for safe keeping. Many have been digitized to protect their quality and can be viewed in the Church online photo gallery:[ www.flickr.com/churchofireland ]

Throughout next week, from Monday (13th July) to Friday (17th July), five themes from the collection will be highlighted on the Church of Ireland website, focusing on portraits, places, scenes from missionary work in North India, the Irish International Exhibition in Dublin in 1907, and a tour of Palestine (dated around 1912). The stories will be online each morning from 11am at [ www.ireland.anglican.org/news ]

In some cases, information about the people or locations pictured in the slide is lacking. Readers who see anything or anyone with whom they are familiar, and can help to verify the caption details, will be encouraged to leave a comment under the photo or email the Library at [ library@ireland.anglican.org ]

Family Camping Breaks at Kilbroney Centre

The Kilbroney Centre has announced that during August, they hope to run some family breaks in tents (which guests would bring themselves).

This offers the advantage of being outside in family hubs and each family hub will have a shower/toilet area for their use alone. All food will be provided.

There would be Bible teaching, worship, a campfire and some activities – similar to the New Year House Party but outside, in summer and hopefully, in sunshine!

The maximum capacity for hubs/tents is 10 at a time and they are currently thinking about 2 night breaks.

Contact the centre if you think it might be something you would be interested in and if you’d like more information on dates and prices. Please note that only family breaks are being offered.

The Kilbroney Centre has been closed since lockdown began and whilst the board and staff welcome the reopening of hotels and hostels, it is not yet possible to open the centre for normal use.

Points for prayer

It’s heartening to hear good news and we’re so thankful that many couples are finally able to marry, though in different circumstances to normal. We pray for God’s blessing on them and their families and friends who may or may not be present for the wedding.

Today we pray for migrant sex workers in Thailand. They’ve been among the hardest hit by the economic impact of Covid-19 and many do not have access to government aid. We pray for your provision and compassionate policymaking ensure they receive necessary support
