A number of changes and appointments have been announced to the Chapters of Lisburn Cathedral, St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast, Down Cathedral and Dromore Cathedral
In Lisburn Cathedral, the Rev Canon Sam Wright, incumbent of Lisburn Cathedral, has been appointed as Precentor in the Chapter of Saint Saviour, Connor.
The Rev Canon George Irwin, incumbent of Ballymacash, has been appointed as Treasurer in the Chapter of Saint Saviour, Connor.
The Rev William Taggart, incumbent of St Katharine, Belfast, has been appointed as Prebendary of Kilroot in the Chapter of Saint Saviour, Connor.
In Belfast Cathedral, the Reverend Nigel Baylor, incumbent of Jordanstown, has been appointed as a Connor Canon of Belfast Cathedral.
This follows the recent appointment of the Reverend Jerome Munyangaju, incumbent of Killyleagh, as a Chapter Canon of Belfast Cathedral
The current Prebendary of Dromara, Canon Robert Howard, if to be Chancellor of the Chapter of Dromore Cathedral.
There are six stalls in Dromore Cathedral occupied by the Prebendary of Dromara, the Treasurer, the Precentor, the Chancellor, the Archdeacon and Dean. In the past each canon moved up a seat as each stall became vacant, but for the last ten years or so the new canons are placed in the Prebendary, Treasurer or Precentor’s stall, whichever is vacant, and upon a vacancy in the Chancellor’s stall, one of these three canons is ‘promoted’.
Canon Robert Howard, who has been on the chapter for almost six years, has served as Prebendary during that time. This role brings with it the minuting of Chapter meetings which take place three times a year. He hands over this responsibility to Revd Gareth Harron whose appointment to the chapter was announced earlier this week.
The Chancellor’s position is traditionally associated with a legal role but has no longer any duties associated with it. There is no connection with the role of Chancellor at Diocesan Synod meetings.
Revd Jono Pierce, rector of Cregagh, is to be a canon of Down Cathedral and Revd Gareth Harron, rector of Magheralin, is to become a canon of Dromore Cathedral.
Both men have links with their respective Cathedrals. Mr Pierce was a minor canon whilst he was rector of Kilmore and Inch and Mr Harron served a curacy in Dromore Cathedral.
