Psalm 113:3 From the rising of the sun to its going down let the Name of the Lord be praised.
One of my seminary classmates and I went on a pilgrimage to visit Marian shrines in the United States. We camped for a night along Lake Michigan. As we made our way to the beach, we followed a stream lined by tall trees that cast dark shadows against the brilliant stars. More fireflies than I had ever seen flickered in the night. It was the most amazing thing I had ever witnessed.
We had gone on a trip to find “thin places,” assuming they would be in convents and churches. And yet, here we were in the middle of the woods, finding just such a thin place, where the wonder of heaven shone through.
The shrines we visited were imbued with the faith of countless Christians. But the holiness of these manmade places was merely an echo of the dazzling magnificence of a living, breathing creation. We found the Divine in a least expected place. Thanks be to God.
MOVING FORWARD: When has God surprised you in an unexpected place?
