Matthew 28:15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story is still told among the Jews to this day.
In passage in Matthew, the guards posted to watch Jesus’ tomb go to the chief priests and report the resurrection. The chief priests, threatened and probably scared by this knowledge, pay the guards a bribe to say that Jesus’ disciples stole his body.
I have never considered myself a very materialistic person, but to say that money has not tarnished me would be untrue. When I took an evening job working as a private practice psychotherapist, my only goal was to help people. But it wasn’t long before I started judging my success by the size of my monthly check, not by my clients’ growth and health. Money was a silent seducer that took my best intentions and twisted them into selfishness.
Our personal relationship with money deserves regular reflection. Money can bless and build the kingdom, but it can also lead us into temptations we might do well to avoid.
