SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

2 Peter 1:13-14 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to refresh your memory, since I know that my death will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.

In today’s reading, Peter writes that the Lord has revealed the knowledge of his forthcoming death to him. I read Peter’s knowledge of his coming death as one of the greatest of God’s many, many mercies.

The Ash Wednesday liturgy is one of my favorite Christian rituals. Hey, the church says to us every year, you should probably not forget that you are going to die someday. And yes, that includes you, the invincible 15-year-old with the thick hair and the strong heart. You too will die. What are we doing with the minutes we have remaining on the ticking parking meters that are our lives?

Meditating on our mortality is a wonderful thing to do, in Lent and at other times. It is not meant to be a morbid act—or a depressing one. An intentional life is a life lived abundantly—and a life lived abundantly is one of the things Jesus has come to give us.

MOVING FORWARD: When was the last time you updated your will or final wishes? Is it time to do some work?
