TCD Chapel – December services and events

The chapel programme includes a memorial service for Professor Trevor West, Carols by Candelight, singing at the lighting of the Houses of the Oireachtas Christmas Tree  and a fundraising concert for Dublin’s Simon Community

Tuesday 4 December
The Trinity College Dublin Chapel Choir will sing at the lighting of the Houses of the Oireachtas Christmas Tree at 5.00pm on Tuesday 4 December. In the presence of TDs, Senators and the party leaders, the TCD Choir will sing seasonal favourites. The engagement is the final event in the Choir’s year of festivities to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its foundation in 1762.

Wednesday 5 December
A fundraising concert in aid of the Dublin Simon Community and Opera Theatre Company will be held in Trinity College Chapel on Wednesday 5 December at 8.00pm. This will be a rare opportunity to hear two of Ireland’s most renowned voices, as Ann Murray and Virginia Kerr take to the stage for an evening of arias and song. Accompanied by Brenda Hurley (Director of the International Opera Studio in Zurich) this unique concert will feature many familiar gems of opera interspersed with highlights from Opera Theatre Company’s work, covering everything from baroque to contemporary song, via Mozart and Puccini.  Tickets priced at €30/26 are available from www.nch.ie or 01 417 0000.

Thursday 6 December
The beautiful annual service ‘Carols by Candlelight: Words and Music for the Season of Advent’ will be held in the Chapel of Trinity College Dublin on Thursday 6 December at 5.15pm. The Dean of Residence, the Revd Darren McCallig, will preach. All welcome.

Friday 7 December
A Memorial Service for Trevor West F.T.C.D. will be held in Trinity College Dublin Chapel on Friday 7 December at 5.15pm. Trevor was Associate Professor of Pure Mathematics in TCD (1977-2004), as well as Junior Dean (1974-1978), a former Member of the Board of the College and a former Chair of D.U.C.A.C. In addition, he was a member of Seanad Éireann for the University of Dublin constituency (1970, 1973, 1977 and 1982).
 
Sunday 9 December
Ombudsman and Information Commissioner Ms. Emily O’Reilly will speak in Trinity College Chapel on 9 December as part of the ‘Soul Sisters’ series of Sunday morning addresses. The talks are in the context of the Church of Ireland Sunday morning Choral Eucharist which begins at 10.45am. All are welcome. Ms. O’Reilly will speak about the woman who inspires her.

Prior to her appointment as Ireland’s first female Ombudsman and Information Commissioner in June 2003, Emily O’Reilly was an accomplished journalist and author whose roles included many years as a political correspondent with prominent print and broadcasting media including The Sunday Times, The Sunday Business Post, RTE and Today FM.

Monday 10 December
The Trinity College Carol Service will take place in the TCD Chapel on Monday 10 December at 5.05pm. The Provost of TCD, Dr. Patrick Prendergast will, as customary, read the final lesson – the Prologue from the Fourth Gospel. Refreshments afterwards in the Atrium. All welcome.
