Cork organ inauguration concert

First phase completed
On Friday evening last March 13th, St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral hosted a choral concert to inaugurate the new Choir Organ – this marks the completion of the first phase of the organ restoration. The occasion also marked the completion of two more phases of the restoration of the building: the full repointing and cleaning of the main spire and the renovation of the gates, railings and walls on Bishop Street.

The Dean of Cork, the Very Reverend Nigel Dunne, expressed his delight in welcoming local guests to enjoy the magnificent surroundings of Cork’s Anglican Cathedral. “With all the work going on at the moment, it’s important to take the time to welcome people in to enjoy our rich musical tradition and the sheer beauty of the building itself. We are very keen to acknowledge the importance of the Cathedral in the everyday life of Cork’s civil, cultural and religious life”.

The first phase of the €1.2 million restoration work to the Cathedral Organ is now completed. The next step in the process will see a new organ going into the west gallery in April. In June, the biggest phase of the works will commence and the old organ pipes will be removed from the most unusual  ‘organ pit’ in the north transept and refurbished.
