SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

Job 19:25 For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth.

There’s an exercise I’ve done in therapy a few times when I am in a fraught relationship or feeling stuck or in a time of immense stress. I imagine that I make the decision to walk away from my life and move to a beach somewhere and start completely fresh, washing the slate clean.

My therapist said to me, “You’re not actually going to leave. But I want you to experience what that feels like in your body—the possibility of everything being cleared away.” I am flooded with feelings of hopefulness and refreshment, like I’ve been holding my breath for a long time and am finally able to breathe deeply.

This passage from Job feels the same way. It strums some chord deep within me, a resonance planted somewhere beyond my conscious self. After crying out to God, trying to make sense of this messy world, the clarity and renewal that comes from declaratively stating, “I know that my redeemer lives” is a deeply soothing prayer.

MOVING FORWARD: What prayers or verses soothe your soul?
