Consecration preacher

The Rt Revd the Lord Eames of Armagh will be the preacher at The Ordination and Consecration of The Very Revd Patrick Rooke as a Bishop in the Church of God to serve in the Dioceses of Tuam, Killala and Achonry by the Archbishop of Armagh, The Most Revd Alan Harper. St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh, today, Thursday 8th September at 4.00pm. In the course of his address Lord Eames will refer to the current economic situation and the church’s witness. Musical emphasis at St Columb’s Derry

A special service of Thanksgiving and Dedication will be held in St Columb’s Cathedral, Londonderry on Sunday 11 September at 7.30 pm. Following on from the major celebrations on June 9 to mark the complete restoration of the historic building, the service on Sunday evening will focus on the life of the Cathedral in terms of its music and choral tradition. 

In the course of the liturgy the Dean of Derry, Dr William Morton, will dedicate a new CD of the hymns of Cecil Frances Alexander, which has been recorded by the Cathedral Choir and the Cathedral Chamber Choir. See MUSIC – this site – for further details.

Cecil Frances Alexander Exhibition

A special exhibition on the lives and works of Archbishop William and Mrs Cecil Frances Alexander is now open to visitors in The Chapter House of St Columb’s Cathedral from  9.30 – 4.30, Monday-Saturday.

Commissioning of reader
During the service of Choral Matins on Sunday next at 11.00 am in St Columb’s Cathedral, Mr David Bell will be commissioned as a Parish Reader by the Dean of Derry, Dr Morton, to serve in the Cathedral. The preacher will be the Reverend Canon John Merrick. There will also be an Act of Remembrance during the service to mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11

Service of Introduction

A Service of Introduction of the Rev Stephen McElhinney, former curate of Drumglass Parish, Dungannon, was held in St Columba’s, Derryvolgie, Diocese of Connor, on Tuesday September 6. During the service Stephen was commissioned as priest–in–charge by the Rt Rev Alan Abernethy (Bishop of Connor).  Lyn Dobbin, Emma Fleming (former parish reader) and the Rev Don Gamble (interim minister) read the lessons and the Rev Andrew Forster (rector of Drumglass Parish) preached the sermon. Stephen, 41, is married to Cathy, and the couple has three children Ruby (10), Patrick (9) and Scott (5). Councillor Brian Heading , Mayor of Lisburn was present at the service.
