Unity week; New rector; Bishop to run marathon; New rector for Ballymaccarett; Dublin Book launch; Secretary’s new post

New rector for Ballymaccarett
The Revd John Cunningham has been appointed rector of Ballymacarrett in east Belfast. Mr Cunningham was ordained in 1998 and is currently rector of Ballymoney, Finvoy and Rasharkin in the Diocese of Connor. He succeeds the Revd Colin Hall-Thompson, now Senior Chaplain to the Mission to Seafarers (NI).

Church Unity Week continues
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity continues next week with a United Community Service in Christ Church, Taney, at 3.30pm, where the address will be given by Dr Margaret Daly-Denton. The Bishop of Down & Dromore will preach in First Bangor Presbyterian Church while in Monkstown parish church the Revd Professor Enda McDonagh will preach at a service of Evening Prayer at 7.30pm. On Monday evening at 8pm in the JM Synge Theatre in TCD there will be a lecture under the auspices of the ISE, Dublin Council of Chuches and the Lutheran Church in Ireland. Professor Martin Jung, University of Osnabrueck, will speak on on ‘Philip Melanchthon – Reformer between Humanism, Protestantism and Catholicism’. – Irish Times


Change of career for Diocesan Secretary

Scott Hayes, currently Diocesan Secretary for the United Dioceses of Dublin & Glendalough, has been appointed Head of Relationship Management (Faith) for Ecclesiastical Insurance. He will begin his new post on 1 February. Scott has been closely associated with Church affairs from his days as a boy chorister in Saint Stephen’s Church, his time as Administrator of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin to the present.

Speaking of the newly created position, Managing Director of EIO, Mr Ronan Foley said, “We are delighted to welcome Scott to Ecclesiastical Insurance. Scott will play a key role in the service and expansion of our faith based business and become an integral part of the senior management team as we look to continue our investment in Ireland”.

Dublin Book launch
On Tuesday following the meeting of the Stranding Committee at 12.45pm there will be a Dublin launch for the recently published book, Edgar Turner at 90, a memoir by some friends, edited by Canon John Mann and published by Columba Press.

Bishop of Down & Dromore to run Belfast Marathon
This May, Ethiopia comes to Belfast as Simon Hale from Tearfund partner Kale Haywet in Ethiopia runs the Belfast Marathon, alongside Bishop Harold and former Presbyterian Moderator Stafford Carson. Supporters can join the relay section or take on the challenge of the Marathon Walk, Fun Run, Wheelchair Marathon or even the whole race. The organisers hope to raise £10,000 to help Ethiopian churches establish small-scale loans schemes to benefit more than 5,000 people in rural communities. Supporters also get to meet Simon Hale afterwards at a special lunchtime reception where you’ll hear about his church’s amazing work. Belfast City Council closing date for early entries is Friday 25th March 2011.
