Initiative to commemorate Seán Ó Riada.
Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise (The Irish Guild of the Church) is supporting an initiative to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of Seán Ó Riada on 2 October. The Ó Riada family have sent a proposal to all churches (including the Church of Ireland) requesting that a liturgical piece of Seán’s work form part of the music of the service, e.g., the Lord’s Prayer/Ár nAthair or Ag Críost an Síol. Several churches have already agreed to incorporate his music into services, namely, St Canice’s Cathedral (Kilkenny), St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church (Galway), St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral (Cork), Christ Church Cathedral (Dublin), Sandford Church (Dublin) and Kilgobbin Church in Kerry.

Church Services in Irish

There will be a lunchtime service in Irish in Christ Church Cathedral on the 4th Monday of each month, namely 26 September, 24 October and 28 November.

The Euchorist will be celebrated at 5.00 in Christ Church Cathedral on Sunday, 25 September, 23 October and 27 November. The time of this service will change in the New Year.

Heritage week at St Patrick’s

St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin had a very exciting Heritage Week this year; it was a huge success with record numbers in attendance for some of our events.

The week began with a very well attended talk by Albert Fenton on “Jonathan
Swift as Dean of the Cathedral”. The talk attracted some of the country’s experts
on Swift. Ongoing throughout the week was the Tower Tour, this year hosted by
Education Officer Andrew Staunton-Smith. According to Andrew “the tours
could have been filled several times over” and his only regret from the week was
that “we can bring only eight people at a time and we just couldn’t accommodate
everyone”.On the Tuesday evening there was a free organ recital with David Leigh
and the following evening by a fascinating literary talk and tour with
Canon Charles Mullen.

Arguably the most unusual element of the week was the presence from Wednesday
to Friday of two medieval knights in the Cathedral. They were reenacting
the story of “The Door of Reconciliation”, which for those who don’t
know, led to the coining of the phrase “to chance one’s arm”. Two re-enactments
were performed each day and one of our knights, Dave Swift, gave a short talk at
the end of each on the arms and armour from the period. The crowds were able to
handle and try on a sample of replica equipment throughout the day which made
the excited children’s day!

On the Friday the Cathedral hosted a talk by Patrick Hugh Lynch on the “History
of the British Legion in Ireland”. Again it was very well attended including
Minister for State and Public Service Reform and the Office of Public Works,
Brian Hayes TD.

Monkstown handwrites the Gospels

The Church of the Good Shepherd in Monkstown, Connor Diocese, is hosting a series of events from Saturday September 24 until Sunday October 2 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James version of the Bible.

The main part of the week will be handwriting the Gospels, to emulate and re–create the work of the Celtic monks of old.

On top of this, all sorts of things are planned, and many different groups and churches will be involved including Quakers, Moravians, Antiochan Orthodox, Roman Catholic and the Presbyterians.

Exhibits from the Somme Museum, Linenhall Library, the NI Bible Society, St Patrick’s Centre Downpatrick, and the Centre for Celtic Spirituality will also be on display.
Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in activities, perhaps writing out some verses of the Gospels, or joining in an evening of Gregorian chant and meditation led by the monks of Holy Cross monastery, Rostrevor, complete with harp music and Irish dancing.

There will be storytelling with Liz Weir and the unique hillbilly gospel hall music of the Low Country Boys at the end of a community fun day which will feature Vikings, monastic scribes and King James himself!
