Cathedral takes ex-judge to court on choir job discord

St Anne’s in Belfast has taken a former Supreme Court Judge to court – updated Jan 26th

The Cathedral board served Sir Donald Murray with a High Court injunction last December to stop him publishing the findings of two internal inquiries. They focus on a dispute involving the Cathedral’s former Director of Music, Philip Stopford.

The Cathedral Board decided that due to financial shortfall the post would be made redundant.

The decision it is claimed prompted the resignation of five lay board members. Now, Dean Houston McKelvey of St Anne’s is facing calls to explain his role in the dispute. The Dean who has not publically commented on the situation, however was not present at Board meetings when this decision was discussed or decided.

Issued on behalf of the Board of Belfast Cathedral

Belfast Cathedral

In his recent interview to the BBC Sir Donald Murray invited the Dean of Belfast, the Very Revd Dr Houston McKelvey, to explain his role in the redundancy of the post of Director of Music.

The Board of Belfast Cathedral would like to confirm that, at his express request, the Dean did not participate in the financial review or decision making process which led to the redundancy. Both the review and the proposed redundancy are matters which fall exclusively within the powers and duties of the Board.
