SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

Friday 23rd September

A QUOTE, A TEXT AND A PRAYER…OR TWO
The churches have been asked to take time between September 1 and October 31 to reflect on Creationtime. PRAY2DAY is observing Creationtime this week

A QUOTE

“There is no way you can be faithful to Scripture and sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit without becoming involved in the efforts to rescue the environment. … Rescuing the environment from an impending disaster is biblically mandated and ending the careless selfish life-style that has brought us to this impending disaster is a Christian obligation. … One of the primary reasons for efforts to preserve God’s creation lies in the growing awareness that those who are most prone to suffer the consequences of environmental irresponsibility are the poor. …Irresponsible stewardship of God’s creation and our greedy exploitation of natural resources have wrought unbelievable suffering. … Even though Christians have been commissioned by God to be good stewards of His Creation, they appear to be the least concerned with what is going on.”
— Tony Campolo, evangelist

A TEXT

Then he told them a parable, “There was once a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself, ‘What am I to do? I have not enough room to store my crops.’ Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain and my goods in them’… But God said to him, ‘Fool! This very night the demand will be made for your soul; and this hoard of yours, whose will it be then?’ So it is when someone stores up treasure for himself instead of becoming rich in the sight of God.” Luke 12: 16-18, 20-21

AND A PRAYER…OR TWO

Almighty God, Creator and Lord of all things,
you have provided the vast resources of earth and sea,
and the hidden forces of nature:
Teach us to recognise your hand in all your works and to use your gifts responsibly for the benefit of all people
that we may rejoice in your goodness with reverence and thanksgiving;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,    Amen

Knowledge of God’s Creation
Almighty and everlasting God, you made the universe with all its marvellous order, its atoms, worlds, and galaxies, and the infinite complexity of living creatures: Grant that, as we probe the mysteries of your creation, we may come to know you more truly, and more surely fulfil our rote in your eternal purpose; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.   Amen
