SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

Monday 19th September

A QUOTE, A TEXT AND A PRAYER…OR TWO
The churches have been asked to take time between September 1 and October 31 to reflect on Creationtime. PRAY2DAY is observing Creationtime this week

A QUOTE

“Let him who possesses a field, so partake of its yearly fruits, that he may not suffer the ground to be injured by his negligence; but let him endeavor to hand it down to posterity as he received it, or even better cultivated. Let him so feed on its fruits that he neither dissipates it by luxury, nor permits it to be marred by neglect. Moreover, let everyone regard himself as the steward of God in all things which he possesses. Then he will neither conduct himself dissolutely, nor corrupt by abuse those things which God requires to be preserved. …The creation is quite like a spacious and splendid house, provided and filled with the most exquisite and the most abundant furnishings. Everything in it tells us of God.”
— John Calvin (1509-1564), theologian and Protestant reformer

A TEXT

The earth has yielded its produce; God, our God has blessed us. Psalm 67:6

What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.

AND A PRAYER…OR TWO

Creator God
Out of the overflowing of your love you created all things
with rich variety and great beauty,
and entrusted us with responsibility for them;
grant that we might so value all that you have given into our care
that we may strive to sustain its blessings for all people for all time; through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ,
Who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
One God, now and for ever. Amen

Stewardship of air and space
Eternal God, in your infinite goodness and wisdom you have created the air we breathe, that complex, yet subtle mixture of gases on which all life depends. As human beings, who alone can pollute, destroy and contaminate your pure gift, make us alert to our great responsibility, and give governments wisdom and courage to intervene and direct, for the good of all your creation. This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.   Amen
