Methodist Women give Malawian Babies an HIV Free Start to Life

Methodist women in Ireland have raised £ 13,350  to fund programmes in Malawian villages to give babies an HIV free start to life.‘Each day 1,800 infants contract HIV from their mothers during pregnancy’ says Tim Magowan, Tearfund’s Northern Ireland Director. ‘By supporting and advising HIV+ mothers our local church partners are able to dramatically reduce the risk of infection.

With the support of Methodist Women in Ireland, Tearfund’s church partner Eagles has been able to address stigma, encourage HIV testing and provide support to pregnant women in the Chikwawa district. Almost 25% of people in this area are HIV+, twice the national average.
