New CDs by Trinity Church choir, New York, mark 9/11

CDs with a specially composed Requiem, and of Bach’s complete motets form part of Trinity’s response within an impressive programme this week.

Requiem CD Released

In commemoration of the tenth anniversary of 9/11, the composer Robert Moran created the Trinity Requiem, a new piece for children’s voices. The piece was commissioned by Trinity Wall Street and will have its world premiere, sung by the Trinity Youth Chorus, at a concert at Trinity Church on September 7 at 6pm.

Moran has composed operas, ballets, orchestral and vocal works, as well as large-scale musical compositions that have included thousands of performers, radio and television stations, and dance ensembles in the street.

The Trinity Requiem, sung by the Trinity Youth Chorus, is also featured on a new CD released today by Innova Recordings.

“While many of the singers were barely born at the time of the attacks in New York,” the CD notes state on Innova’s website, “the composer found inspiration in the all-too common grief found in war zones around the world (such as Kosovo and London) when children suddenly lose their families to violence.”

New Trinity Choir Bach CD

On September 1, Johann Sebastian Bach — Complete Motets, a new CD featuring the Trinity Choir and Trinity Baroque Orchestra, and conducted by Julian Wachner, was released by Musica Omnia.

Bach’s seven motets are among his most demanding vocal compositions. The Trinity Choir and Baroque Orchestra recorded the motets from May 30 to June 2, 2011. The CD release coincides with Trinity Wall Street’s observances of the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

“We recorded these pivotal Motets not only in the context of informed performance practice, but in full consideration of Bach’s liturgically savvy, yet emotionally interpretive approach to setting texts,” said Wachner, Director of Music and Arts at Trinity Wall Street.

“These hopeful, spiritually rich texts beautifully convey the spirit of our community’s 9/11 observances.”

CDs are available for purchase via Musica Omnia.

The Trinity Choir, conducted by Julian Wachner, performs the works of Bach every Monday at St. Paul’s Chapel at 1pm for Bach at One. Learn more about Bach at One here.

Bach at One and other performances by the Trinity Choir will also be an important part of Trinity’s 9/11 observances.
