University lays the foundations to study Church Music

Canterbury Christ Church University and the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) have come togetherin a new collaboration intended to support and develop the work of church musicians all over the country.

The partnership is offering a new Foundation Degree which can be completed in two years for a full-time student, or four years if the degree is being done part-time.

The Church Music Foundation Degree course is firmly grounded in practical, work-based study. Much of the practical work is done in the student’s own place of worship or local group, whilst online materials and residential study schools make up the academic core of the course.

Chris Price, Senior Lecturer in the Music Department, said: “This degree course is a natural development for the Christ Church Music Department: we are a Church of England foundation; the Cathedral is just across the road from the Canterbury Campus; the Organist, David Flood, is a fellow of the University and a visiting lecturer in the department; and two of the Music Department’s lecturers are Lay Clerks in the Cathedral Choir with over 50 years’ experience of church music between them. It’s high time we turned this commitment and enthusiasm into something more substantial.

“The idea behind the Church Music Foundation Degree is that it should be directly relevant to your work, with an appreciable part of the assessment taking place in and around the job you do. We know that many, many people across the country are working incredibly hard in their local churches and music groups, and we think a number of them would like to deepen their knowledge and understanding of what they do, and why.“
